| Interesting week. We had a couple of regional people that were supposed to give us a look over and tell us how we could improve things in our office. Kinda like a soft audit, and apparently we did pretty well. I had one lady helping with the d/c audits, which was appreciated, but I kinda had to go behind her a bit and make sure she didn't miss things. But she did get a lot more done in the week than I would have. And Scheduler took the opportunity to grouse about how overworked she is, blah blah blah. The regional BOM commented in a private meeting with the higher ups that Scheduler brings most of her "overwork" on herself anyway. There is definitely a feeling that her shenanigans are not going to be tolerated as much any more, so we'll see how long she lasts.
Some of you may know this was nurse's week. The evil AE at our office came in on Tuesday with a big basket on her arm filled to overflowing with all those cheapie little things you get in the bins at Target: lotions, flowerpots, etc. She went around the entire office saying, "Look what I'me doing for nurse's day!" She had attached her card to every item, and was going to hand them out to nurses at hospitals and MD offices to drum up business. Nice, huh? What do you think she did for our nurses? Not a bloody thing, not even so much as a cake at the weekly meeting. Like I said, she is evil.
Am on call this weekend, but happily someone else is seeing patients, so I will be taking my phone with me to the Ren faire and hope I don't get too many calls. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| Saturday Ary and I drove down to Cleveland, TN for a wedding for a couple of his old college friends. Wedding was nice and there was no drama. Went out for dinner with friends afterward, kidnapping Tigger along the way so she could join us. Drove back home barely staying awake, checked email and tumbled into bed.
Yesterday since it was such a lovely day we decided to spend the afternoon at the TN Ren faire which has just opened up. We picked up Marie along the way, and she will hereafter be known as First Mistress or FM. (It's a long story, so don't ask unless you really want to know) Wandered around the faire looking at all the shops; there were some new, and some that had disappeared. Made mental notes of places for potential gift getting. Noted while at the Human Chess match that one of the Jolly Rodgers Brothers (aka the Buccaneer Blades) was MIA, and saw that the act was now called Buckle and Swash. Went to see that out of curiosity and found it was most entertaining, with more silly slapstick and less innuendo, and a healthy scattering of puns. After that we followed Red Rodgers (Fred is the missing one) to another stage to see the Royal Improv. Standing in for Fred Rodgers was the puppeteer from Death Stands up; we have never seen his show, maybe we should. And standing in for the peasant girl who was not there this year was Lord Wimsey the Fop. It was hilarious as always. After that we scurried over to the Boss Wench tent and got Ary a very nice new pair of Renaissance pants, which he badly needed. I was eyeing a few things while we were there, and may try some things out myself when we go back next weekend. Caught the last bit of the pubsing before heading on home.
In other news the drama pot seems to be bubbling again at work, and I may have some complaints for the admin when we have our plan of action meeting tomorrow. I think the only way we can rid ourselves of the drama is to get rid of Scheduler, but don't know when or if that will happen. Oh well. | comments: Leave a comment |

| oropher_777, I need you to bring that violet gem when you come; apparently the special effects hair colour is not something to try to get on the spur of the moment. They say it is taking 1-2 weeks to get to them, and then however long to get to me. So I'll use what you've got, and maybe try other colours another time.
Nothing much new going on here. Still trying to play catch up at work, making a little headway. So far no disasters there.
This Saturday we go to Cleveland, TN for a wedding. Ceremony is at 1PM, so we will probably meet you for a late supper, Tigger. See ya then. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |

| Work is work. I spent a good part of the day playing catch up from the four day weekend I had. I am hearing mutterings against Scheduler again from BOM, but so far nothing I can go to Admin with. The good news, the auditor from hell that we had all last week is gone; the bad news, she ripped into us something awful; the good news, the two charts she requested to review that were nowhere to be found finally turned up, and so we won't get penalized for them; the bad news, she's still going to review them. This woman is a vindictive bitch who seems to take great pleasure in finding errors and meting out punishment for them. I think she is in the wrong line of work, frankly; there are other places where that attitude might be welcome.
I just realized I forgot to tell you about the terrible Lipazzan horses we saw at the Ren faire. Actually, there was nothing wrong with the horses, they were beautiful, but not as well trained as they needed to be. After seeing the Royal Lipazzanners earlier this month, these horsies were a bit substandard. Not their fault, though, as their trainers clearly didn't have the kind of control they needed.
That is all. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| On Friday drove down to Atlanta, making a brief stop to pick up tiggertailz, to spend the weekend with oropher_777 and her family. We got there around nine that evening, so we sat around chatting a bit before heading up to bed.
Next morning up bright and early for the Ren faire. We actually got there in plenty of time for the opening, owing to the fact that we thought the gates opened at ten when they opened at 10:30. I was wearing my fairy wings and so got chatted up by some of my fairy "cousins" who told me that if I encountered King Henry VIII I was to stick out my tongue in a mocking manner, for he hath forbidden the fairy folk from flying in his realm. "And all because we dropped a chamber pot on his head that one time."
King Henry greeted us with Queen Anne Bolyn (sp?) at his side. He's going through them rather quickly; last year it was Queen Catherine and Anne was one of her ladies in waiting. Mind you, the lady playing Anne this year was the same one who played Catherine last year, and the lady who played Anne last year was nowhere to be seen. Strange that. This year there were apparently some pirates who had stolen the Queen's crown, but we didn't catch much of the story this time.
In fact we really didn't watch very many shows at all. The Lost Boys are not there this year, and there really aren't that many good musical acts without them. The Zucchini Brothers are now just one, the other taking on fulltime daddy duty. And then it rained in the middle of the day, which kinda put a *ahem* damper on things. But we had fun wandering around and shopping. Ary was looking for a new pair of pants, as the buttons keep popping off his sailor pants. But alas, the ones he found in a style he liked were not in a good color, and the ones in a good colour were in a weird style. I tried to encourage him to get some tights, but he didn't seem interested. He did, however, get a very nice turquoise (or teal) shirt, which he can wear in protest if the GA faire doesn't bring the Lost Boys back next year.
We did see some shows of course. We had to catch Dextre Tripp, esp since Oropher has never seen any of his acts. We took her to the one where he duct tapes firecrackers to his chest and sets them off, then gets the audience to throw water balloons at him. Talk about your mass participation stunts! It's funny, we have seen Dextre several times now, and he always has the same three acts, with more or less the same banter, but he never gets boring or tired, as some of the other acts do. Oropher enjoyed him, and we feel sure her Hubster would appreciate him as well.
Then we saw the Flying Debris Comedy Juggling, which was essentially the Zucchini Brothers minus one. He did a lot of the same tricks he had done as a Zucchini brother, but there was enough new stuff to hold interest. After him were the Nickel Shakespeare Girls, self-described girl on girl Shakespeare action. They were three girls who would assume poses, sometimes silly, sometimes highly acrobatic, often both, and then would recite Shakespeare. They promised to give us a selection from all 37 of the plays, and they had a checklist to make sure. They were quite entertaining, a bit like the Reduced Shakepeare Company, only with girls.
Went to the pirate raffle/auction but didn't get anything. Wandered around shopping some more and Ary bought me a really pretty tri-color amber necklace. After we had seen all the shops we decided to head on home, giving the pub sing a miss this time; it's not the same without the Lost Boys.
Back to Oropher's, showered, and had dinner, then sat around chatting and joking. Tigger went to bed, and I had Oropher help me make some photo t-shirts. It was getting late and we were starting to think of bed and plans for the morning when the phone rang. I had a sinking feeling I knew who it would be and I was right. Oropher's grandfather has been very sick with cancer and that Saturday night he passed on. Ary and I comforted her as best we could, then finally went on to bed. The next morning was perhaps less lively than it might have been, but this was because Oropher went to help her mother right after breakfast, so we didn't get to see her anymore for the rest of the trip.
Ary and I went to church then came back to the house and hung around till it was time for lunch at warnerharmer's. The three of us went with the Hubster to celebrate the LM's third birthday, and to coo over newborn Nesterino. While we were at lunch MB called and said their new baby has been born, so I have a new nephew. He is 21" and 10 lbs, 2 oz; yes, he is a big baby, which made for a precipitous delivery and a few health issues as a result, but he seems to be overcoming them so that is good.
After cake and presents and a little play time Ary, Tigger, and I piled into the car and headed on back to TN. Dropped Tigger off and continued on our way, getting back around nine. Hauled stuff in and tumbled into bed almost right away. Whew! What a weekend!
Today I picked up the book of the month from the library: The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. Also got Tolkien's translation of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" and will work on that for June. Tonight is our 27th Lunaversary so Ary and I will be going out to dinner, I think to Olive Garden. And then it's back to work tomorrow, yay, joy. When Ary has pix posted I will let you know. | comments: 8 comments or Leave a comment |

| We got up late for a work day, but early for a non-work day, to get things done before leaving for Atlanta this afternoon. Ary mowed the lawn while I made biscuits. (For those of you who know how lazy I am, try not to faint) We shall pick up Tigger on the way down and spend the weekend with Oropher. Looking forward to it!
Yesterday at work we got a trial issue of a home care newsletter, which we will probably subscribe to as it seems to have lots of good info in it. Of course, "good" can often translate to "alarming" as it does in this case. Things like, if we don't have our assessment data entered within the 30 day window Medicare knocks 2% off what they pay us. Normally that is not a problem, but we sometimes have issues with clinicians discharging a patient, but waiting forever to turn in the paperwork. And then there was the news of the new OASIS set coming out in 2009. For the uninitiated, the OASIS is what we call the huge assessment that we fill out on admission, at resumption of care following hospitalization, and at discharge. CMS (Medicare) made a few minor changes to it at the beginning of this year, and after looking at the new one that's coming out next year, I wonder why they bothered. The new OASIS has had a major overhaul, with so many new and changed items that we probably wouldn't have noticed the piddly changes they decided to put in this year. It looks like a nightmare, quite frankly, and could make the admission visit last nearly three hours if done properly. Admittedly it does make for a nice, thorough assessment, and will certainly be good for the patient. But since CMS is planning to give us *LESS* reimbursment in the coming years, I can already hear the complaining. In the newsletter, someone asked CMS point blank how they could justify essentially giving us more work and paying us less. "You're going to put a lot of home health companies out of business!" The rep who was quoted did a very good job at not answering the question, but saying how good this would be for the patient. It won't be so good for the patient if there's no home health company to come do the assessment in the first place. I suspect admitting clinicians will demand more money for doing this kind of work, and our Corporate at least is so tight with the money that we may have a mass exodus before that happens. I think the worst part of it, from a staffing point of view, is that most of the additional stuff are all very clinical things, so either the therapists are going to have to change their way of thinking (ha!), or we will have to have a nurse admit every patient, even if nursing is not ordered. Oh it's going to be fun, fun, fun!
*sigh* Sorry, had to vent a little. Be back on Monday. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| Work update: Things seem a little calmer now. They were quite tense last week as we all waited to see what scheduler and AE would do next, and scheduler continued her work avoidance tendencies. On Thursday I actually got called into the Admin's office to give my own account of events. She made the comment that she thought things had been going very well and we had a good office dynamic, but it had started going downhill right before the holidays. Yeah, I thought, that's when Scheduler started work here. I feel sure that Admin is capable of making that connection, so I said nothing on that point. Anyway, Scheduler finally sat down and learned how to enter orders and time sheets on Friday. So all is well there. The atmosphere is definitely less chilly, and we have a new AE (in addition to the first one) who seems a lot nicer and more professional. So we'll see how things go.
Hair update: One person noticed my hair, the same person who noticed my new glasses. However, I will not be streaking my hair purple. I did order some purple hair dye last week, to be sent to Oropher's, but then I got an email saying it was out of stock. I think this was Fate intervening, so we'll just do blonde streaks if that's okay, oropher_777.
Book club: Went okay. Everyone seemed to like the book (No, I Don't Want to Join a Book Club by Virginia Ironside), though we were just a bit shocked by sixty year old women talking about sex and having one night stands. But they had been children of the 1960s, so I guess it shouldn't have been surprising. It was a sweet book, though; I liked it.
Nashville Smial: Met again at Borders last Thursday to discuss Tolkien's essay "On Fairy Stories". Was quite a lively discussion, covering Harry Potter, Disc World, and other forms of modern fantasy, in addition to the various traditional fairy story types and how far they go back. Very edifying. Our next group discussion will be on "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight", but I have till June to get through that.
Knoxville: Was lots of fun. Ary and I took turns manning his booth and wandering around the Expo picking up freebies. After listening to his spiel several times I was able to speak with some authority and at least tell people why we were there and point them to the appropriate literature on our table. And I think I did even better walking around cos people kept asking what TDEC stands for, which of course is an excellent jumping off point. (It stands for Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation) After we took the booth down on Sunday and made off with all our swag, we took a detour to Lenoir City to visit Ary's grandparents. They live on a house boat on Ft Loudon Lake off the Tennessee River. I had never been there, so his grandmother gave me a quick tour. It was pretty nifty, and if I wouldn't have had to give up most of my stuff, I wouldn't mind living on a house boat. Not sure how the cats would like it though. And on the way home we stopped in Cookeville to visit the parentals.
That's all for now. | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |

| Last few days have been busy.
To give you a quickie sum-up, the scheduling coordinator, to whom I have referred before as a backstabbing bitch who can't do her own job without butting in on others', kinda hit a high (or perhaps low) point in how far she will go to avoid doing the job she was hired to, which is to manage the schedule, with this little computer program called the scheduling grid, into which she is supposed to enter orders so she can keep track of the visit frequency. She seems very reluctant to do this for some reason, doesn't think it should be part of her job, and so far when the time comes for her to be trained in this, she has called in with: cellulitis of the toe, the flu, mono, and the latest on Thursday, a possible brain aneurysm. I am reminded of the little boy who cried wolf. Anyway, it was so bad that day that on Friday when the DOPS and Admin looked like giving her the benefit of the doubt AGAIN I finally stepped in and said that it seemed awfully convenient that scheduler always falls ill whenever her duty calls, and we know she is manipulative and has job avoidance issues, so maybe we shouldn't be quite so forgiving. I hoped that if it came from me, someone who is technically higher up than the scheduler, and who rarely complains about co-workers, apart from the occasional "Why can't the clinicians get their paperwork right the FIRST time?!", that it would carry a little more weight than complaints from the BOM and Clerical, both of whom have made quite clear their dislike for Scheduler. We shall see. I know the DOPS is reluctant to see her go, cos then the burden of the schedule will fall on her once again, but since we're only getting a half-assed job done now, I don't see where it makes much difference, apart from our poor DOPS being horribly overworked. Well, we'll just see what happens next week.
I was on call this weekend and got plenty of calls, but happily nothing that I needed to go anywhere for. So I tidied up a little around the house (Ary was in a fencing tournament in Memphis), then went walking in Warner Park with sailingwest and her two doggies. We didn't have our boyscout with us, so we found ourselves looping round and round and round quite a lot, finally getting back to the parking lot over two hours later. I did worry a little about predators (the human kind), but figured two women with two dogs would probably not look like a good target. When we got back to our cars we were both aching horribly; everything hurt from the hips down. But happily this morning the pain was all gone (advil is your friend), except for a few twinges in my feet, and I was down a pound by the bathroom scale. Whoo hoo!
Today we had Sailingwest and Marie (the two mistresses) over for lunch and chat, most enjoyable. After they left Ary and I went over to my office so I could write up the PT referral I accepted yesterday, and on the way stopped to get our hair cut. I am back to chin length, my default length, and the hairdresser (a very chatty lady) said I should be able to say goodbye to the last of my layers in another three months. Hurrah! Now here's another opportunity for my co-workers to not notice I got my hair cut. Have you got some purple streaks for me, oropher_777?
Tomorrow is book club, and I'm hosting, so I'll let you know how that goes. (At least the house is already clean) Then we start to get busy: Next weekend Ary and I go to Knoxville to man a booth for his branch of TDEC at a food and fuel expo; I get to be his booth bunny, so I guess I need to pack something sexy to wear. The weekend after that we go down to Georgia to catch the faire and visit with Oropher et al. (What would you like us to bring, Oropher, from damp (not dry) Tennessee?) The weekend after that (first one in May) is a wedding in Cleveland, TN. (Wanna catch for dinner afterward, Tigger?) The weekend after that...um, nothing cos I will be on call, though we may try to catch the TN faire anyway. The weekend after that Oropher will come up to join us for the TN faire. And the weekend after that is Memorial Day weekend and we will be heading up to VA to visit with family. BTW, somewhere in there my SIL will be having her baby, who will probably be called Nathan. Please pray for her.

| Have not had a real post in a long time, so shall attempt to catch y'all up.
Have been spending a lot of time with members of the Nashville Smial and TN Fellowship lately. On the 27th of last month we had a Tolkien Reading day (only two days late) at the Borders in Cool Springs. Excellent location with a decent cafe (mmm, coffee...), and we got parked in a corner where all the textbooks and such are. They apparently put all reading groups back there as it is not much frequented, but we had a couple students come looking for study materials; it is about the time for SATs after all.
We took turns reading favourite passages and poems by Tolkien. Ary read "The Man in the Moon Came Down" aka the hey diddle diddle song. This is one of my favourites, which meant I had to pick something else to read. Happily in the same book (the Tolkien Reader) was a lesser known poem that does not appear in the Middle Earth Chronicles (as far as I know) called "The Cat". It's basically about how the cat does not forget his wild ancestry, and is very cool to read aloud.
After the readings we talked about Tolkien in general and the potential Hobbit movie in particular. I think all of us are a bit leary about what New Line may do to it, esp if they get an "outsider" to direct it. General consensus was that Alan Rickman should voice Smaug.
We also wandered off topic a bit, esp when Barry and Katrina (who work there) mentioned how at closing time one of the unofficial duties is to hunt down the "Pop-Up Kama Sutra" and return it to its shelf. This led to all kinds of lively discussion as I'm sure you can guess, and I'm rather suprised they didn't send anyone back to tell us to keep it down.
We are supposed to have another book moot there next week to discuss the "On Fairy Stories" essay by Tolkien. Am much looking forward to it.
Other moot things included seeing the Lipazzaner (sp?) stallions with Marie and sailingwest; we decided it was a moot when Paul and Kim showed up as well. And the very next day Sailingwest joined me to watch Ary at a Vanderbilt fencing tournament. I think she is a bit of a good luck charm for him (esp chanting "poke 'im, poke 'im, poke 'im!") cos he placed 14th out of 41. His friend Steve was also there, and between the three of us we came up with a fencing cheer:
We've got spirit, yes we do! We've got spirit, how 'bout you? Take your epee and run him through!
Sailingwest is starting to get interested in taking up fencing, though that interest probably has something to do with the men she might meet. ;~)
Hmm, I think that might be it for now. Work is keeping me terribly busy, but that's hardly news, is it? | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |

| Okay, I am doing a service for my DOPS here. She had recently acquired a stray dog, looks like a black lab, very sweet and friendly, and unfortunately pregnant. Yesterday she gave birth to NINE puppies. Now I was in a similar predicament last year, Lillie having had four kittens, so I feel for her and am trying to help...short of actually taking one myself. So anyone here who is not too far from Nashville (like within driving distance) and wants a puppy, or knows someone who wants a puppy, please speak up and I will put you in contact with the proud but overwhelmed granny.

What was the last thing that annoyed you? Getting rained on coming out of church. Didn't annoy me that much, though. | comments: 2 comments or Leave a comment |
